La Magia de Lego® Serious Play® – 3) Nos Gusta Jugar

Durante nuestra infancia, cuando nuestras habilidades se están desarrollándo a una velocidad alucinante, jugamos continuamente y la mayoría de las veces sin objetivos específicos. Jugamos por jugar. Usamos el juego para explorar nuestra identidad personal, para interpretar el mundo, para ensayar y pulir nuestras habilidades. Jugamos para aprender a ser nosotros mismos y para entender el mundo en el que vivimos. Obviamente este fase de nuestro desarrollo es esencial y es el juego y su elemento de diversión, su parte lúdica la que garantiza el aprendizaje.

Más adelante, siendo ya adolescente, nuestra manera de jugar cambia y se orienta más hacia jugar para socializarse y conseguir objetivos (juegos organizados o deportes) y de alguna manera, jugar llega a tener cierta “estructura” y ya no es “jugar por libre”.

En la formación en empresas, cuando ponemos las piezas de Lego delante de un grupo de personas por primera vez, primero les hacemos construir cosas por libre, para que vayan acostumbrándose al Lego. En ese mismo momento, al mismo tiempo estamos despertando los sentimientos de diversión inocente que llevamos todos dentro. Esos buenos sentimientos hacen que la gente acepten la metodología con ganas e ilusión. Aparte, hay muchas personas que recuerdan de inmediato las horas pasaron jugando con Lego de niño, y casi todas (por no decir todas) tienen buenos recuerdos de eso.

A los pocos minutos, a raíz de las preguntas y los objetivos, un taller de Lego Serious Play, se vuelve serio, por supuesto. Es el momento en que las piezas se transforman en una herramienta tremendamente flexible con un protocolo que fomenta la sinceridad y la confianza y todo eso sobre esa base firme de juego, diversión y buenos recuerdos. Incluso resulta sorprendente ver participantes coger las piezas “con ganas de jugar” para formular críticas negativas sobre personas o procesos. Parece que hasta reflexiones personales que nos suelen costar hacer, son fáciles dependiendo de la herramienta.

Finalmente, la metodología Lego Serious Play nos permite jugar de nuevo, despertando un proceso innato y lúdico que se pone al servicio de la comunicación, el aprendizaje y unos objetivos específicos.

1. Can you express how you feel today in words?
2. Now, close your eyes and think of an image or an object that represents how you feel today. Easy isn’t it? I’m sure that you can easily describe what you are thinking of so that I can easily understand it (and possibly even draw it for me). I could ask more questions about the image or object you are thinking of and as I do so, you might change or clarify some of the details as the concept becomes clearer to us both.

These are two ways of asking (and responding to) the same question. However, doing so using a metaphor greatly enriches the process and gives us the freedom to be more creative. Also linking two things that on the surface have nothing to do with each other allows us to explore it from a different and more creative perspective.

Whether it be in training, in strategy meetings or in brainstorming sessions, when we use Lego bricks in a Lego Serious Play workshop, 99% of the time we are working with metaphors and we are doing this in a natural, intuitive and playful way. The questions posed, the facilitation and the bricks themselves all invite the natural use of metaphors. This key aspect of the methodology guarantees different results and is part of the magic.

To finish up, how many meanings do you think you can you give to this Lego brick?

In Lego Serious Play workshops I have seen this brick come to represent such differing concepts as bravery, emotions, urgency, objectives, love, compassion, reward, destiny, god etc…

La Magía de Lego® Serious Play® – 2) El Poder de una Metáfora

“La metáfora es probablemente la potencia más fértil que el hombre posee.” Ortega y Gasset 1883 – 1955

1. ¿Podrías describir en tres o cuatro palabras como te sientes hoy?
2. Ahora cierra los ojos y piensa en una imagen o un objeto que representa como te sientes hoy ¿Fácil no? Estoy seguro de que lo podrías describir (o incluso dibujar) fácilmente y lo entenderíamos todos. Podríamos explorar mas al fondo como te sientas, haciendo preguntas sobre esta imagen o objeto que tienes en mente y es posible de que de paso, añadirías y cambiarías detalles para aclarar algunas ideas / conceptos.

Esto son dos maneras de hacer (y responder) a la misma pregunta, pero haciéndolo a través de una metáfora enriquece mucho mas el proceso, nos da permiso de ser más creativo y nos permita explorar mas las ideas que tenemos porque estamos relacionando dos cosas que a priori no tiene nada que ver el uno con el otro.

Sea en formación, sea en reuniones de estrategia o sea en sesiones de lluvia de ideas, cuando usamos piezas de Lego en un taller de Lego Serious Play, 99% del tiempo estamos usando metáforas para expresarnos y estamos haciéndolo de una manera fácil, intuitiva y lúdica. Las preguntas, la facilitación y las piezas mismas te invitan a hacerlo y la metodología garantiza resultados diferentes.

Por último, cuantos significados puedes dar a este pieza de Lego?

Esa pieza tan sencilla ha llegado a significar cosas tan distintas como corazón, valor, urgencia, objetivos, peligro, amor, recompensación, el destino, una idea, dios etc.

Eso es el poder que tiene Lego Serious Play de liberar nuestra mente y facilitar comunicación creativa.

Hace poco en una presentación con el departamento de Recursos Humanos de una empresa en Madrid, alguien me preguntó ¿Cuál es la magia de Lego ® Serious Play ®?

Es una buena pregunta y voy a intentar explicarlo en un serie de artículos cortos tratando los aspectos “mágicos” que hacen que tenga tanto éxito.

La Magía de Lego® Serious Play® – 1) “Confía en las Piezas. Allí está la Respuesta”

Lo sé! Suena un poco extraño. Incluso un poco esotérico. Como si fuera una lema Jedi! pero es verdad y os lo explico…

Una de la frases que un facilitador de una sesión de Lego Serious Play usa mucho es “ no tengas una reunión contigo mismo – toca las piezas y construye!”. Parar, pensar y después responder verbalmente es lo que solemos hacer cuando nos hacen una pregunta que requiere reflexión. Este patrón lo repetimos miles y miles de veces durante un día – a veces pensando más y a veces pensando menos – pero el proceso es tan natural y tan habitual que casi siempre accedemos a nuestro cerebro por la misma vía y por lo tanto las posibilidades de que la respuesta sea condicionada por una manera especifica de pensar son altas.

Con Lego Serious Play paramos el proceso habitual y obligamos a tocar las piezas para responder. Por supuesto seguimos pensando en una respuesta porque es imposible dejar de pensar sobre lo que te acaban de preguntar, pero cuando haces la reflexión a la vez tocas piezas de distintos colores y formas – piezas elegidas específicamente porque nuestro cerebro es capaz de convertirlas rápidamente en símbolos y metáforas – las mismas piezas te inspiran una respuesta. Ves una pieza delante tuyo, la tocas, intentas relacionarlo con la pregunta, la juntas con otra pieza, luego con otra y con otra. Terminas construyendo la respuesta con las manos y el cerebro, funcionando juntos. Así estas sacando la respuesta de otra parte de tu cerebro – la parte más creativa y mas visual – y eso puede ser la diferencia entre una idea normal y una idea brillante, o una reflexión personal estructurada y ensayada y una reflexión personal libre y más sincera.

Y no se limita a la fase de construcción. Después cuando cuentas la historia de tu modelo, el proceso sigue. Hablar de las piezas y el modelo es en efecto repasar lo que acabas de pensar pero casi siempre los participantes descubren más sentido detrás de las piezas cuando explican su modelo. Piezas que a priori no tenían un porqué cogen significado porque el cerebro continúa siendo inspirado visualmente.

Y ahí tampoco termina el proceso. Cuando otros participantes hacen preguntas sobre lo que ven, eso provoca aún mas reflexión y muchas veces la persona que ha construido el modelo descubre algo sobre su metáfora que no había pensado. Muchas personas cambian y adaptan su modelo en función de preguntas recibidas.

No se usa las piezas ni Lego Serious Play para analizar la manera de pensar de las personas. Es una vía alternativa de pensamiento tremendamente visual y creativa y por lo tanto provoca respuestas distinas. Definitivamente parte de su magia está en “confía en las piezas”.

A while ago during a Lego Serious Play demo someone asked me: “What is the magic behind Lego Serious Play?”.

It’s a good question and over the coming week or so I am going to try to explain it in a series of short articles dealing with specific aspects of this “magic”.

The Magic of Lego Serious Play 1) “Trust the bricks. The answer is there!”

I know it sounds strange. Perhaps even a little esoteric – perhaps even “Jedi-like”. It is however true. Let me explain.

One of the phrases a Lego Serious Play facilitator uses a lot is “don’t have a meeting with yourself – build!”. Normally when asked a question that requires some degree of reflection we stop, think and then respond verbally. The process repeats itself thousands of time throughout each day. Sometimes we think more, sometimes we think less but the process is natural and so frequent that we almost always tap into our brains via the same route. That means that the possibility of theanswer being conditioned by a specific way of thinking is very high.

With Lego Serious Play we stop this traditional way of thinking and we make participants touch the bricks to find the answer. Our brains of course keep thinking. It would be impossible to turn off that process. However, when that thought process is combined with looking at and touching Lego bricks of different colours, shapes and sizes (bricks that have been specially chosen so we can easily converted them into metaphors), the bricks themselves inspire thoughts and answers. You see brick in front of you, you touch it, you try to link it to the question, you combine it with more and more bricks and before you know it, you have used your hands and your brain together to build the answer in a model. In doing this you are drawing on a different part of your brain – a more creative and visual side. This can be the difference between a normal idea and a brilliant idea. It can be the difference between a conditioned and rehearsed personal reflection and one that is more honest and free of judgement.

It doesn’t stop there. After building, when participants tell their story and describe the model, the process continues. Talking about the bricks and the model is like going over your thoughts again and almost always participants find new meaning to what they have built and adapt their story. Bricks that at first had no meaning take one on now and others change from one idea to another. All this because the brain is still being inspired visually (and now enhanced because we are in story telling mode – another part of the magic).

It doesn’t stop there. When others ask questions about a model and what they see, this provokes another round of reflection in the person who built it and many participants end up finding new meanings and metaphors. Many make changes to their models at this stage.

To clarify -we don’t use Lego bricks or Lego Serious Play to analyse how people think. It is an incredibly visual and creative way of provoking alternative thought and as a result it yields different answers.

Without a doubt, part of its magic lies in trusting the bricks”.

This is specific feedback from the manager of a team of 15 people following an 8 hour Lego Serious Play workshop we did recently.

Sector: Financial / Banking

Workshop Objectives:

• Based on the overall company objectives, identify personal objectives for each team member
• Align the individual objectives so that they become common team objectives for 2012
• Identify all the obstacles to reaching the 2012 objectives
• Find solutions to the main obstacles
• Brainstorm how the team can improve its overall performance
• Unite and strengthen the team and develop closer relationships and ties between its members

Methodology

• We built a workshop exclusively around Lego Serious Play – working with both individual and group models
• We also combined the model building with some more well known training concepts (SWOT analysis and Circles of Control and Influence) to map what they built

The Results

• We met all the objectives set out by the client
• We had full involvement from all participants throughout the whole day
• Although there were some difficult “crucial conversations”, participants enjoyed the experience
• By the end of the day, the team had a full understanding of how they performed and how they could improve
• An improvement in the sense of “team spirit” was noticeable by the end of the workshop, and even more so two weeks later at a follow up meeting.

The following phrase came up during the workshop and captures very well the overall result: “we are much more a team than I thought we were”
